Senses: Exceptional long-range motion detection, average hearing. Readily picks up standing hunter silhouettes.

Behavior: Strictly diurnal in bright, sunny weather. Inhabits boulder talus slopes and alpine meadows of Montana. Spends most of the year (fall through winter) in deep underground hibernation.

Diet: Forbs, wild alfalfa, grass seeds.

Population: Harem colonies (1 mature male with several females and offspring). Sensitive to hunting pressure: sustained culling of dominant males drives colonies out of their dens.
