Senses: Keen eyesight. Mediocre hearing, relies primarily on visual scans of the shore.

Behavior: Diurnal wetland inhabitant. Roosts on thick tree branches near water around midday. When threatened, prefers to take refuge in dense aquatic cover rather than taking flight.

Diet: Tropical aquatic plants, roots, small fish.

Population: Solitary individuals or stable harems (1 drake with 2–3 hens). A large Brazilian winged trophy with a slower reproduction rate than typical waterfowl.
