Senses: Sharp hearing, poor vision for stationary objects. Easily spooked by the heavy footsteps of the hunter.

Behavior: Active during the day (06:00–18:00). Feeds in the morning and evening among dwarf tundra willows, resting during midday in snow hollows. When alarmed, the entire covey flushes at once.

Diet: Buds, shrub shoots, wild berries.

Population: Travels in stable coveys of 5–12 birds. A classic small-game winged trophy of Alaska's snowy northern expanses.
